A Provencal Haven of Peace

Located in the heart of Drôme Provençale, Nyons is an essential destination for lovers of nature, culture and gastronomy. This charming city is bathed in soft light and a Mediterranean climate conducive to discovery and relaxation. It is the center town of the Baronnies Provençales Regional Natural Park (of which the Cloître des Dominicains is “Park Values”)

A rich and authentic heritage

Nyons, nicknamed “little Nice”, charms its visitors with its historical heritage. It is also the town of René Barjavel whose footsteps you can follow with the “Barjavel circuit”. Stroll through the cobbled streets around the Place aux Arcades, admire the Tour Randonne dominating the city, a vestige of the Middle Ages, and cross the Roman Bridge, a 13th century engineering masterpiece. History buffs will also appreciate the Olive Museum, which traces the history of this emblematic fruit of the region.

An activity also unique to Nyons: Scourtinerie. It is the last national scourtin factory. Scourtins are woven coconut fiber baskets used as a filter for the extraction of olive oil. Today, La Scourtinerie also offers magnificent natural fiber shades.

Did you come to Provence for lavender? Nyons is a few steps from the fields of this magnificent flower! Take advantage of your visit to this city to open the doors of the Bleu Provence distillery: distillery of essential oils mainly lavender.

Exceptional gastronomy

The Nyons olive grove has been elected a “remarkable site of taste”. Famous for its olives and its olive oil, of which Tanche is AOP, Nyons is a mecca for Provençal gastronomy. Don’t miss a visit to the Vignolis area to taste this local wealth, accompanied by tapenades and other regional specialties. The weekly Provençal market on Thursday mornings, one of the oldest in the region, is full of local products: lime trees, cheeses, honey, lavender, apricots, wines and aromatic herbs.

On your return to the Cloître des Dominicains you can follow the “Route de l’Olivier” which goes from Nyons to Buis-les-Baronnies via Mirabel-aux-Baronnies. You will cross the Eygues, Ouvèze and Ennuyé valleys as well as picturesque villages steeped in olive oil history.

Nature activities

Nyons is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Between hikes in the Baronnies of Provence, bike rides in the middle of olive fields and refreshing swims in the Eygues or even the discovery of the Jardin aux Arômes, there is no shortage of options. Spring and autumn, with their mild temperatures, are the ideal seasons to explore these enchanting landscapes.

Festivals and Events

The city vibrates to the rhythm of numerous cultural and festive events. From Easter, the festivities begin with the Easter Corso, continue with the Olivades in July and end with the “8 days of the city of Nyons”: a nationally known Pétanque championship. Summer is marked by the Festiv’été concerts from the beginning of July to the end of August.

Concerning the Olivades, this event takes place on the weekend around July 20 with different markets, walks or bike rides, culinary and cosmetic workshops as well as the consumer price of black olives from Nyons.
